Chapter 18

When the Settling
Doesn't Hold

"We're all on the same bus."

Sometimes the settling didn't hold.

We all had to settle with each other. But sometimes the settling didn't hold.

Sometimes a word landed wrong. Sometimes a glance meant more than it should. Sometimes the pressure of the week, the travel, the missed cut, the bad sleep — it all came out sideways.

And then the silence was louder than the talk.

'We're all on the same bus.'

We were on a tour bus, heading to the next tournament. Hours on the road. Everyone tired. Everyone in their own head.

One player was restless. She kept moving seats, sighing loudly, making it clear she wasn't happy. Another player was trying to sleep. Another was reading. Another was staring out the window, miles away. Lots were sleeping.

The restless one started making comments. Not loud enough to be a fight. Loud enough to be felt.

I watched. I didn't say anything. Neither did anyone else.

Then, after about twenty minutes, the one who was reading looked up. She said, very quietly:

"We're all on the same bus."

That was it. That was all.

The restless one stopped and finally fell asleep. The silence changed. It wasn't heavy anymore. It was just... quiet.

We all knew what she was like. We're all on the same bus. We're all going to the same place. We all have our own reasons for being tired, frustrated, anxious. But we're on the same bus.

You don't always fix things. Sometimes you just survive them.

You walk past each other on the range. You nod. You let the air clear on its own. Because tomorrow there's another tee time. Another country. Another chance to start again.

That's tour life.
